Mahabaleshwar is located at Maharashtra in India. It has an average elevation of 4440 ft. located at Sahyadri range in Satara district of Maharashtra. It is located in the south-west of Pune at 112 km and in the south-east of Mumbai at 260+km.

Krishna the 3rd largest rivers of India which flows in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is origin from Mahabaleshwar. There are many Points, Temples and Waterfalls in Mahabaleshwar which we will discuss in this post.

History                                               


In 1215, King Singhan of Deogiri visited Mahabaleshwar this is the first historical mention of Mahabaleshwar.

In the 17th Century, Shivaji Maharaj takes charge and build famous Mahabaleshwar point Pratapgad fort.

When the British era came they made Mahabaleshwar as the summer capital of Bombay provenience. Many British officers were come to see the places to visit in Mahabaleshwar that is why many points are named after the British officer.

1. Kates point


Top places to visit in Mahabaleshwar, Kates point is one of them. In this point Eco Point & Needle Point also include. From Kates point Balkawadi Dam, Kamalgarh fort and Dhom Dam is visible.

It’s named after British governor Sir John Malcolm’s daughter Kates Malcolm. There are lots of monkeys here, If you go there, take something for them.

This place was also known as "Nake Khind" during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

2. Elephant Head Point


Why is it named Elephant Head Point you will understand by looking at it.

It is a beautiful point of Mahabaleshwar. The beauty of nature is worth seeing from here. Elephant Head Point is the best place to visit in Mahabaleshwar to see the art of God. 

It is also known as Needle Hole Point. It has a hole between the rock that looks like a Needle eye.

3. Connaught Peak


One of the best Mahabaleshwar point to see the dense forest from above. But the only drawback is there would be a long way to go once you parked your car.

4. Elphinstone Point


Elphinstone Point was named after the British Governor of Bombay Mountstuart Elphinstone.


It was discovered in 1830 by Dr James Murray, the only place among the places to visit in Mahabaleshwar which was discovered by Dr James.



To its left Koyna Valley and to the right is the Savitri Valley. Pratapgard Fort is in front of this point.

5. 3 Monkeys point


3 Monkeys are sitting one by one. It is an incredible piece of the art of nature, which makes us think that three monkeys are sitting in the same sequence.

6. Savitri Point




The best point nearby Arthur's Seat. Savitri Point is a good option for places to see in Mahabaleshwar.



River Savitri is seen from here, hence the Valley is known as Savitri valley.

You don't need to panic by looking at the turning stairs, you will enjoy the splendid sunset and valley view.

7. Arthur's Seat Point


It is also known as Suicide Point or Queen of all point.

It offers a natural view created by the Brahma- Arya and Savitri river.

It’s named after a British officer Sir Arthur Malet, who used to come to this point every day. Sir Arthur’s wife and his 3-month daughter were lost in a boat accident.

Arthur is famous for floating of a light object in the air.

Arthur's seat also has tracking points like Window point, Echo point, Malcolm point, Tiger Spring point and Hunter point.

8. Tiger Spring Point

The water is so clear, natural and pure. people believe that tigers used to come here to quench their thirst.

10. Shivkalin Khandegaon

11. Pratapgad fort

The king of all Mahabaleshwar points.

A popular hill station of Mahabaleshwar, which stands 3540ft above sea level. The Maratha’s King Shivaji Maharaj, Prime Minister Trimbak Pingle undertake the construction of Pratapgad fort to protect his land around Nira and the Koyna river. In 1616 this Fort was completed.

The fort of Pratapgad has seen many battles, one of which was Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal khan battle. Shivaji Maharaj won the battle.

Pratapgad Fort is now ruined but you can still see its grandeur. The fort can be divided into the upper and lower fort. There are large Strongholds and Walls in the lower fort and in upper fort some buildings and a temple of Mahadev.

One of the most attractive parts of Pratapgad Fort is the temple of goddess Bhavani Devi which was built by Shivaji Maharaj because he was unable to visit the temple a goddess Bhavani at Tuljapur.

12. Bombay Point/Sunset Point

Beautiful and lovely place to see the sun go behind the mountains.  Sunset Point is the best place to see in Mahabaleshwar at evening. 

You can choose to do Horse riding and Play fun games if you are interested.

13. Lodwick point


There are so many places to see in Mahabaleshwar with extraordinary scenic beauties, this point is one of them.

The monument present at the spot reveals why this spot is called Lodwick point.

There is an around 700m from parking to reach Lodwick Point and also an option of Horse riding here to cover this distance.

If you want to experience a view of table-top plateau, this is a perfect place.


Further to this, a little trek towards the end of the mountain would make you feel like you are on the top of the world.

14. Dhobi Waterfall

15. Panchganga Temple

Panchganga temple is a very old temple in Mahabaleshwar of Lord Krishna. The Temple is made of black stones.

Panch means five and whole Panchganga mean “Five Ganga” in which Gayatri, Savitri, Koyna, Venna and Krishna river are included.

The water comes from the Mouth of Stone Cow (Gomukh). No one knows how the water coming from and where it is going.

16. Krishnabai Temple

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A beautiful Black stone temple with an epic architecture. There is also a stone cow here. The view of the Krishna river is awesome from Krishnabai temple.

17. Mahabaleshwar Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva here Swayambhu linga ( Linga that came upon his own) is installed. Here a bed of Lord Shiva. The local folklore believes that shiva comes here to rest.

There is also a Damru and a Trident (Trishul) which are almost 300 years old.

In this temple, Shivaji weighted his mother Jijabai with gold and divided that gold among his subjects. This place is the most venerated place among other places to visit in Mahabaleshwar.

18. Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross Church is one of the holiest Mahabaleshwar pointsThis church was started in 1828 with a cross as a small shrine that was converted into a chapel in 1831.

It is the smallest church in the Diocese of Poona with only seven resident catholic families. The church enders religious services not only to these seven families but also to the tourists who throng in large numbers from all over India.

19. Chinaman Waterfall

The place was named after the Chinese prison located in the vicinity.

24. Lingmala Waterfall


Another beautiful waterfall whose waterfalls in the Venna Lake.

It's having a serene view but in order to witness that you will have to walk some distance and climb a few stairs. Its entry gate is very far from the actual waterfall viewpoint.

The climate of Mahabaleshwar is very good for strawberry cultivation.

Mahabaleshwar strawberry contributes approximately 85% of the total production of strawberries in India.
